Span 315: Introduction to Translation: Spanish/English In this course I learned many things about Introduction to translation. This course was taught by Dr. Oliva he gave us the brief explanation between translation and interpretation although this course only focuses on translation he wanted to make sure we understood the difference. Dr. Olivia would assign us homework such as grammar because is a fundamental aspect of translating because a person needs to know grammar and language to be able to do the procedure. In some cases, Professor Oliva would assign us to translate short stories or news in the languages English to Spanish or vice versa. This type of homework assignments helped me a lot to practice more my translation abilities. However, in this class we used a textbook called “Applied linguistics” and this book was helpful because as a person we think that when someone translates a text you need to be 100% loyal to the text but is wrong there is no way to be 100% loyal to the text because you need to consider a lot things while translating for example the context, the language usage and most importantly not being literal to text because whoever is reading the translation they might understand the text. In translation there are 15 techniques which are adaptation, borrowing, calque, compensation compression/ reduction, description ,equivalence, explicitation, generalization, literal translation, modulation, particularisation, substitution, transposition, and variation. To summarize, this course prepared for future translations although it can be challenging it helped to keep a really good technique on hand such as to have a dictionary. I feel that this course prepared me to translate on a daily basis.
